Origin

1st rib and its associated cartilage.

Insertion

Inferior surface of the middle 1/3 of the Clavicle.

Innervation

N. to Subclavius (C5, C6)

Action

  • Clavicle depression or elevation of 1st rib.
  • This action primarily stabilizes the clavicle in the sternoclavicular joint.
Note

The subclavius’ ability to stabilize the SCJ depends on the degree of shoulder motion.

Practical Function

  • The subclavius muscle actions aid in stability of the clavicle in the sternoclavicular joint
